Fall: The Perfect Season for New Senior Activities
Published September 24, 2014 by Francesca Robinson, MA in Senior Health & Wellness
It’s the first day of fall, and with it brings all things pumpkin: pumpkin drinks, pumpkin pastries, pumpkin scented candles, pumpkin decorations and, of course, the documentation of the pumpkin craze on your social media accounts. So, in case you missed it, happy unofficial pumpkin day or happy fall!
Besides all things pumpkin, fall is a gorgeous time of year that provides an opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy all the season has to offer. This wonderful season is wedged between the blistering hot summer and the busyness of the holiday season and offers the perfect opportunity for seniors to try new activities.
It’s no secret that physical activity is imperative for senior health. Even if you or your senior loved one has never been one to to hit the gym, there still is hope– it’s never too late to reap the health benefits of exercise, regardless of your age. The good news is muscle mass can increase at any age, so whether you are 25 or 95 you can benefit from lifting weights. If you have never started an exercise regime, why not give it a try this season. First, consult a doctor to find out what activities are safe for you, and then hire a physical trainer. Every gym has qualified trainers that can guide you through new exercises in a safe but challenging way. Another way to stay motivated is to recruit a workout buddy. Ask a friend or a caregiver to accompany you to the gym.
Besides going to the gym, there are other ways to stay active. In fact, today’s seniors are taking their activities seriously. At Exploritas, formerly known as Elderhostel, the proportion of senior travel adventurers over age 85 has increased more than 70 percent since 2004. The stereotyped picture of all seniors playing bingo just isn’t true. Senior activities are as diverse and varied as ever. From sports to gardening, from traveling to nordic pole walking, activities take on the personalities of each person. Sometimes, support is needed to continue to remain active and caregivers creatively assist when necessary.
At Preferred Care at Home we come alongside seniors providing the care and assistance needed for our clients to remain active. Our caregivers provide the support and assistance needed so you can continue doing the activities you love as well as try new ones.
It’s fall, the weather is beautiful, step outside for a walk.
