Glaucoma: How In-Home Care Can Help

Glaucoma is one of the most common diseases affecting the eye. If left untreated, it can lead to blindness. It’s important to catch glaucoma early and follow your doctor’s orders. At Preferred Care at Home, we’re committed to helping with both of these steps.

Glaucoma Symptoms (or the Lack Thereof)

Glaucoma is often hard to recognize because it can develop with little to no symptoms. One of the most common signs is pressure in the eye, but the disease often presents itself differently. So it’s hard to diagnose without an eye exam.

Preferred Care at Home believes that education can help promote early detection. Through our common-illness brochure series, we’re dedicated to educating seniors about glaucoma and to promoting regular eye exams.

If you do have symptoms, they may include:

  • Difficulty adjusting to dark rooms
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Double vision
  • Tearing of the eyes
  • Sensitivity to light or glare
  • Sudden loss of vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Seeing white or black spots
  • Seeing a halo around light

If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your eye doctor for a complete eye exam. Regular exams are crucial if you have a family history associated with the disease, have had other eye conditions, or are African-American or Hispanic.

Glaucoma Treatment and In-Home Care

Glaucoma treatment could be as simple as eye drops. It could also include medication, surgery or laser treatment. Glaucoma can’t be cured, but blindness can be prevented by following your doctor’s instructions and having regular eye exams.

At Preferred Care at Home, we’ll help with transportation to eye exams and encourage clients to follow treatment plans. If vision gets worse, we can help prepare the house through home-safety checks.

Glaucoma can be a difficult disease to live with. We understand the challenges and how to help make life better. We’ll be by your side every step of the way.
