Memorial Day 2017: A Field of Flags

Pin

“A field of flags planted in a field representing freedom, bravery, and sacrifice. Thousands of flags planted in memory; thousands of lives given in sacrifice.”

A field of red, white, and blue waved at me as I entered the Boston Common over this Memorial Day weekend. A field of flags planted in a field representing freedom, bravery, and sacrifice. Thousands of flags planted in memory; thousands of lives given in sacrifice. 37,000 American flags representing the all the lives of Massachusetts men and women since the Revolutionary War who paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

PinToday, we remember. We remember the lives that were lost so that we can live in the Land of the Free. To honor them, we celebrate. We celebrate with family and friends, parades and music, good food and games, and the quite moment of reflection. We soak in our freedom because freedom is why they gave their life.

We remember also the families of those fallen. For they too have sacrificed greatly. They never forget the price for freedom because every day they bear the burden of it.

As I walked around the field of American flags, I paused to snap a picture. The picture failed to capture the beauty and inspiration of the scene. Similarly, this simple blog posting fails to capture the depth of gratitude that is due our service men and women. Yet, we pause to remember, because remember we must. May we remember more than just today.

Happy Memorial Day.
