As fall sets in, we get to enjoy all the wonderful changes that come with it. After a hot summer, there’s nothing better than a crisp fall day with orange, red, and yellow leaves drifting from the trees.

This season brings a new variety of activities, sights, smells, and flavors. From pumpkin spice lattes and apple cider in stores to hay bales and pumpkins decorating front porches, fall is a sensory delight. Evenings by a bonfire roasting s’mores are a great way to relax and embrace the season.

As we age, staying active becomes more important than ever for our health and well-being. The changing season offers countless opportunities to stay active and immersed in the joys of fall. Here are some fall-centered activities that can help older adults embrace the season fully.

Fall-Centered Senior Activities

  • Go for a walk: Take advantage of the cool weather before it turns too cold. Enjoy the crisp blue sky and the colorful leaves. Walking with a companion makes it even more enjoyable. All you need is a clear path!
  • Go for a drive: Enjoy the vibrant fall colors by driving around and taking in the scenery. While this may not be a strenuous activity, it still allows you to get out of the house. Bring a companion to drive so you can focus on the beautiful views.
  • Go apple picking: Many orchards now offer reservations to manage the number of visitors. Apple picking is a wonderful way to get outside, get some exercise, and enjoy fresh produce. If it feels too strenuous, bring along a friend or grandchild to help. Check ahead to see if the orchard is accessible, and don’t forget to enjoy an apple cider donut, one of the best parts of visiting an orchard!
  • Decorate your front door: Get creative with seasonal decor. Try making a wreath, setting up a scarecrow, or carving pumpkins. It’s a fun way to welcome the season.

Enjoy the Fall Season from Home

  • Make apple cider: Savor a warm cup of homemade apple cider on a cool day.
  • Stay in touch: Send cards or write letters to friends and family. Staying connected can help you feel engaged even from home.
  • Build a fire: Cozy up by the fire with a good book for a relaxing afternoon.
  • Root for your favorite football team: For many, fall means football. Watch a game and cheer on your favorite team from the comfort of your home.
  • Bake fall-inspired foods: Explore the flavors of the season with apple pie, pumpkin spice treats, or butternut squash dishes. Try making something new to celebrate fall.

What are some of your favorite fall activities? Will you try anything from this list?
