How to Prepare for a Snow Emergency

How to Prepare for a Snow Emergency

Currently, the Northeast is bracing for a winter storm. As I make preparations, mainly making sure I’m stocked in snacks and hot cocoa, my mind turns to the most vulnerable and the added layer of difficulty and danger that is faced when a winter storm hits. The best recommendation is to prepare in advance as best you can, as a winter snowstorm can pose a great threat.  Here are a few ways you can prepare yourself or a senior loved one for a snow emergency.

Check and Stock an Emergency Kit for the Home

Water, non-perishable foods, blankets, flashlight, extra batteries, and a first aid kit are all items you should have prepared and ready in case of a snow emergency. Ready.gov provides a complete list of items for a home emergency kit. If you already have an emergency kit prepared, take the time to check it, update food items, and replenish items where needed.

Check and Stock an Emergency Kit for the Car

It is best to prepare to stay home during winter snow conditions, but regardless of weather, be sure you have the necessary safety supplies in your vehicle. Ready.gov recommends,

  • Jumper cables
  • Flares or reflective triangle
  • Ice scraper
  • Car cell phone charger
  • Blanket
  • Map
  • Cat litter or sand (for better tire traction)

Schedule Grocery Delivery

Many grocery stores or third party companies offer grocery delivery or curbside pickup. These services are great ways, most with only a nominal fee, to safely receive the items you need. Be aware, however, that time slots can be difficult to come by as storms approach. Order and schedule in advance to be sure you have plenty of food and supplies without having to drive in less than desirable conditions.

Schedule Snow Removal

Slips and falls pose a very real danger for the elderly, especially on icy sidewalks and steps. Before a snowstorm, schedule a snow removal service to come clear your driveway and sidewalks for you. Don’t risk a fall, plan in advance!
