My sister and I grew up with a father who was born in Germany and a mother born in the US. We enjoyed an active childhood with family trips to the mountains in the winter to ski and visits to the beach in Maine with my mother’s parents in the summer. In my early teen years, we also made trips to visit my father’s parents living in Florida. Growing up and being engaged with both sets of grandparents was such a gift. I always had been interested in healthcare and later worked in the medical diagnostic field. The products I sold helped to diagnose different types of sicknesses and were the first step in getting a patient back to health.
As I grew older, I watched my grandparents’ health decline, forcing them to move from their homes into assisted living facilities. I remember visiting with my father and his mother in a Florida facility where she wasn’t properly cared for hygienically. I couldn’t believe it and thought, how could this be? This memory stayed with me and motivated me to want to care for those in a vulnerable position and to safeguard their dignity and independence in the comfort and security of their own home.
