When my dad was diagnosed with PSP and I realized that my disabled mom was going to have to try to take care of herself and him I had no idea how that was going to work. I would often find myself visiting frequently to help with tasks that may seem normal for some, but was just too hard for them. While helping my parents move some things in the house my dad (who was very very independent) asked me to move something for him in the garage and to see the happiness on his face when it was done brought me a great sense of satisfaction knowing how hard it was for him to ask. I know what it feels like to have help and to not have help, and it feels a lot better when the help is there. Helping someone is free, but the impact can be worth more than we will ever know. It’s important to be a good person, you never know when you may be on the other side of the helping hand. I absolutely love helping others, I do it for my friends, family and strangers. It’s a great feeling when you can make a difference, big or small, for anyone, anywhere at any time. Making someone smile and feel that sense of relief from your kind gesture is heartwarming.
My vision for senior care in the future involves a lot of mass education. I want people to know that help is available, affordable and doable. I had no idea that there were so many options until I started this journey. We will be providing all the services that the law allows.
My parents have always been independent for as long as I can remember. My mom was diagnosed with RA about 18 years ago and needed my dads help with her everyday tasks that involved any lifting or moving of heavy objects. My dad is very old school and has no issues taking care of my mom and her needs. About a year ago my dad was diagnosed with PSP and he was already declining fast. He has never had to rely on anyone for help with physical tasks and it bothers him everyday that my mom has to take care of him and he feels so lost. He told my sister that he feel like a useless human being. It breaks my heart just thinking about it. I try really hard to help them without making my dad feel like he “needs” it. I really think this experience will help me connect with seniors and their loved ones to show them that Preferred Care really does care.
