MarQuietta & Mareio Lawson
MarQuietta realized that there was a need for home care services when Alabama’s seniors found themselves being hospitalized repeatedly. A knowledge deficit of their disease process played a role in this, but the fear of losing their independence and the thought of being a burden to their loved ones played a bigger role. Time is so precious and spending it with our seniors in the comfort of their own home, while receiving affordable, compassionate and reliable care is very special and rewarding. This is why MarQuietta and her husband Mareio took action.
Alabama residents and owners of Preferred Care at Home of South Alabama, MarQuietta and Mareio are a husband and wife team who have three beautiful daughters. Family is central to who they are and the care that they provide.
As owner and administrator, MarQuietta brings much experience to her role. She started her medical journey as a Certified Nurse Assistant. It all began with her love for helping people. This led her to becoming a Registered Nurse and working in the medical field for over 20 years. Throughout the years she has served as a Nursing Supervisor for Neurosurgery and Neurology, Medical-Surgical, Case Management, Internal Medicine, and Home Health experience. Her faith, passion, and commitment to helping people earned her the Daisy Award, which recognizes extraordinary nurses. This recognition is one of the most honorable and overwhelming moments in her nursing career and would not have been made possible without the support of her husband Mareio, her family and friends, and her faith and belief in God. Family, friends, and faith– it is what motivates and inspires her each and every day.
As a medical professional and the owner of Preferred Care at Home servicing Mobile, Baldwin, Monroe County and beyond, MarQuietta knows that asking for help is not easy and losing your independence may be your greatest fear. In-Home Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care Services in Mobile, AL
We provide a wide range of in-home dementia and Alzheimer’s care services in Mobile, AL, and South Alabama, and they are fully customizable to meet specific individual needs. A basic framework of dementia care plans can help caregivers understand how to meet the needs of individual situations while allowing room for adaptation to changes in health or personality.
Every person suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s is unique, and no two people go through the same journey. Our skilled and compassionate caregivers are available to assist with a variety of services, including:
- Personal Care: Helping with activities of daily living (ADLs)—bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting—in a manner that preserves dignity and respect. Our caregivers have a deep understanding of both the sensitivities involved and offer gentle, patient support.
- Medication Reminders: Taking medications on time and the right way is vital for domiciliary care due to its importance in treating symptoms and maintaining a good quality of life. Our caregivers can help with reminders and opening containers if needed.
- Meal Preparation and Assistance: Preparing nutritional and appetizing meals according to dietary restrictions and tastes. Our feeding assistance service ensures your loved one receives the nutrition and hydration he or she needs.
- Light Housekeeping: Keep your home clean, safe, and comfortable. We assist with chores like laundry, dishes, cleaning up living spaces, etc.
- Companionship and Emotional Support: Stimulating social interaction, challenging and interesting activities, and emotional support to diminish isolation and loneliness. Our caregivers are trained to develop a personal bond where you feel safe and good.
- Respite Care: Short-term relief to family caregivers providing care to an individual to give them a break to rest, relax, or recharge. We know what goes into serving from home and can offer the support necessary to guard against burnout.
- Safety Supervision: In most cases, having safety supervision to ensure a safe environment in day-to-day living falls by the wayside, and these individuals wander and fall. Those who live with some form of dementia or Alzheimer’s face many of the same obstacles.
- Cognitive Engagement Activities: Such as reminiscing, puzzles, and, depending on their condition, light exercises
- Transportation Assistance: Aiding in attending appointments, social gatherings, and all other activities where one must get to, troopers get the individuals around, thus keeping them their independence as well as being part of the community.
Having in-home dementia care or in-home Alzheimer’s care means that your caregiver has home care training to know that these things are not as important because of the nature of these conditions. They have the patience and compassion to deliver the patient-centered care that your loved one deserves, which promotes dignity, autonomy, and quality of life.
What is Dementia?
Dementia is an umbrella term that covers several different conditions in which mental abilities have declined to the extent that they interfere with daily life. Instead of being a disease, it represents a combination of symptoms affecting multiple areas of cognition, including memory, thinking, understanding and speaking, judgment, and reasoning. This cognitive decline can be due to various diseases or injuries to the brain. One of the most important things to understand about dementia, which is, in reality, a subgroup of symptoms, is that it is generally a progressive condition — the symptoms will get worse over time.
Memory loss is perhaps the most recognized aspect of dementia, but it is only one of many symptoms of this multifaceted disease. Those with dementia may have trouble communicating, experience personality and behavior changes, get lost in time and space, and have trouble planning or organizing daily activities.
Dementia can affect people in very different ways, depending on the underlying cause of the disease and the parts of the brain involved. Families and caregivers will not be able to provide the right support and search for efficient dementia care services without a short and clear overview of the evolution of the disease and the full range of impact it has on the aging mind.
What is Alzheimer’s?
Alzheimer’s disease — the most common form of dementia, making up 60 to 80 percent of all cases. This slowly progressive neurodegenerative disorder destroys brain cells over time, causing a gradual loss of cognition. Today, although some treatments exist that may help to lessen the symptoms of Alzheimer’s or slow the progression of the disease in certain individuals, there is as yet no cure for Alzheimer’s, although there is for some other types of dementia.
An Alzheimer’s diagnosis is based on the evidence of a type of abnormal protein deposit in the brain — amyloid plaques and tau tangles. These pathological structures interrupt the communication system of the brain cells and, in the end, lead to their death. The disease usually progresses in stages, each different from the rest, with early symptoms being mild memory loss. People in the later stages of Alzheimer’s may have extreme memory loss and language problems, become disoriented even in familiar environments, and exhibit marked changes in behavior. As a result, using quality Alzheimer’s care that adapts to these changing needs is key to preserving comfort, dignity, and quality of life.
