What is Dementia?
Dementia is a general term describing a decline in cognitive abilities that interferes with daily life and activities. It affects memory, thinking, and reasoning skills, often leading to confusion and emotional challenges.
While commonly associated with aging, dementia is not a normal part of growing older. It results from damage to nerve cells in the brain, which disrupts communication between brain regions. Symptoms can include memory loss, difficulty with language, impaired judgment, and personality changes.
Dementia is a progressive condition, meaning symptoms worsen over time. Though there is no cure, quality care and support can significantly improve the quality of life for those living with this condition.
What is Alzheimer’s?
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, accounting for 60-70% of cases. It is a progressive brain disorder that gradually affects memory, thinking, and behavior.
The disease begins with mild memory lapses and confusion but advances to more severe symptoms, including disorientation, difficulty communicating, and an inability to perform daily tasks. Alzheimer’s is often identified by the presence of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain, which disrupt normal brain function.
Though no cure currently exists, early intervention and proper care can slow the progression of symptoms, offering greater comfort and quality of life.
