When you think of a nurse you know, what word comes to mind? Dedicated. Caring. Hardworking. Compassionate. And as we reflect over the last couple of years living through the Coronavirus Pandemic another word that is sure to come up is ‘brave’.<\/p>\n
Nurses across the country have proven to be the backbone of our healthcare institutions. Providing care in the most harrowing of circumstances. In fact, the field of nursing was established amidst the harrowing. It was during the Crimean War in the mid-1800s where Florence Nightengale, became known as the “Lady with the Lamp” as she spent days and nights caring for the wounded. Nightengale was instrumental in formalizing nursing education and established the Nightingale School of Nursing, at St. Thomas\u2019 Hospital in London (opened 1860).\u00a0 Her impact on the field is forever commemorated on her birthday, May 12, as we celebrate International Nurses Day.<\/p>\n
This week, Nurses Week (May 6-12), we pause to acknowledge and express our gratitude to the nurses in our life.\u00a0 Free coffee and burritos are available to these real-life heroes throughout the week, but perhaps the best gift is a heartfelt “thank you” from the ones who see the sacrifice firsthand.<\/p>\n
Think about the nurses in your life. Share the word that comes to mind when you think of them. As the saying goes, “not all heroes wear capes”, but we know they wear scrubs.<\/p>\n
