Williams directed an influential 5 year study on this finding by researching approximately 13,000 men and woman with no prior history of heart disease. \u00a0Researchers found a significantly higher rate of heart attacks among the participants who exhibited an angry disposition. \u00a0Among the participants with normal blood pressure, the high-anger subjects experienced almost three times as many coronary events as the low-anger subjects. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anger is an element of a personality type. \u00a0In the 1950\u2019s, a theory called Type A personality behavior was identified by a pair of cardiologists named Friedman and Rosenman. \u00a0The Type A personality was purported to include several elements, three of them being: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A strong competitive orientation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Impatience and time urgency<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anger and hostility<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I entertain this subject in an effort to help all of us Type A personalities who are caregivers. \u00a0When dealing with an angry patient or loved one with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease or dementia, it may be difficult not to mimic that aggression and respond in anger based on our personality orientation. \u00a0It goes without saying, but we don\u2019t want an anger response to increase our risk of heart disease or to affect our relationship with our loved one. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here are a few ideas from the Alzheimer\u2019s Association that may help us prevent an incident because of course, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Environmental factors and poor communication may cause aggressive behavior<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over-stimulation from loud noises<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over active environment or physical clutter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Being surrounded by unfamiliar people<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Instructions that are complex and difficult to understand \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Asking too many questions or making too many statements at once<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Exhibiting your own stress or irritability from failing to communicate well <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Solutions: \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Try to identify the immediate cause of the anger. \u00a0What happened right before the reaction that may have triggered the aggression?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rule out pain. \u00a0A person with dementia or Alzheimer&#8217;s who is not feeling well can act aggressively due to pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Focus on feelings and not facts. \u00a0Don\u2019t try and take the upper hand by focusing on the details of what happened but look for the feelings behind the actions. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Try not to mimic their anger. \u00a0Speak in slow soft tones and don\u2019t allow your frustration to show.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Limit distractions and try a relaxing activity to soothe the patient.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Decrease the level of danger by stepping back and taking a deep breath. Avoid using restraint or force.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lastly, and very important.
