What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving? I’ve been thinking a lot about this question while writing my series on family caregivers<\/a> this month. I really do have so many things to be grateful for, but this year, I am especially thankful for stories.<\/p>\n

I am a lover of stories. From a young age you could find me absorbed in books<\/a>, lost in another world, captured by a written story. As I’ve grown older, my love for story has not diminished, instead it has grown stronger as I’ve searched for the stories around me. I’m curious about the people I meet and the stories that have made them and shaped them. I have discovered that the stories around us are so much richer than any book or movie, there are big stories that shaped a generation, a nation, a family. There are deceivingly insignificant stories that have shaped a day and a life. There are so many stories waiting to be shared, all that is needed is someone to listen.<\/p>\n

I have had the privilege to hear some fascinating stories: stories of love and war, hunger and feasting. The seniors around us are living heroes with so many stories waiting for someone to listen. This Thanksgiving, as you gather together with your family, take time to listen to the stories around you. There is no better way to celebrate life, dignity and independence than by listening to the stories of your senior loved one.<\/p>\n
