{"id":6703,"date":"2022-09-05T09:00:52","date_gmt":"2022-09-05T09:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/preferhome.com\/bathing-safety-for-elderly\/"},"modified":"2022-09-05T09:00:52","modified_gmt":"2022-09-05T09:00:52","slug":"bathing-safety-for-elderly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/preferhome.com\/locations\/blog\/bathing-safety-for-elderly\/","title":{"rendered":"Bathing Safety for Elderly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I evaluated an 81 year old client who had been hospitalized for exacerbation of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and had just returned home.\u00a0She had been living alone in a single level apartment and her habit was to sit in the bottom of the tub for bathing.\u00a0She rarely had caregiver assistance and no longer felt safe with this bathing routine due to chronic back pain and legal blindness in her right eye.\u00a0It was time for some modification to her bathing plan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bathing Safety for Elderly is important<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instead of her shower chair being used to hold towels, we placed it in the tub shower.\u00a0A hand held hose was installed to replace her current shower head so she could sit and control the water direction.\u00a0She obtained a long handled nylon scrubber to assist with reaching her feet and back.\u00a0She already had a small suction rubber mat and caddy to hold necessary items.\u00a0A small flat rug outside the tub in a contrasting color with rubber backing completed her safety measures since she had two grab bars previously installed.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. G. demonstrated safe transfers and was educated to wear her oxygen during bathing to ensure good saturation and reduce shortness of breath.\u00a0There may be a time that she will need to sit by the sink and sponge bathe, but for now, she is delighted with her modified version of tub bathing.<\/p>\n<p>It is always a good idea to observe the bathing routine of a loved one if possible, even if they tell you they are doing just fine.\u00a0Bathing safety for elderly and fine tuning safety measures will <a href=\"https:\/\/preferhome.com\/locations\/senior-resources\/common-senior-concerns\/5-ways-to-prevent-a-fall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prevent falls<\/a> as well as the fear of falling and ensure a pleasant bathing experience.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently I evaluated an 81 year old client who had been hospitalized for exacerbation of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) <a href=\"https:\/\/preferhome.com\/locations\/blog\/bathing-safety-for-elderly\/\" class=\"h5 more-link\">Learn More<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":9,"featured_media":1881,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[944,945],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-6703","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-senior-health-wellness","category-senior-safety"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.7 (Yoast SEO v21.7) -
