{"id":6638,"date":"2009-05-20T01:51:23","date_gmt":"2009-05-20T01:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/preferhome.com\/understanding-the-seven-stages-of-alzheimers\/"},"modified":"2009-05-20T01:51:23","modified_gmt":"2009-05-20T01:51:23","slug":"understanding-the-seven-stages-of-alzheimers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/preferhome.com\/locations\/blog\/understanding-the-seven-stages-of-alzheimers\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding the Seven Stages of Alzheimer\u2019s"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>In my last post, I discussed several risk factors involved with the onset of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.\u00a0 I would now like to spend some time discussing the different stages of the disease and how the different stages may affect an individual\u2019s behavior.\u00a0 Scientists are sure of one thing: Alzheimer\u2019s gets worse over time.\u00a0 Although the disease affects different individuals in different ways, scientists have been able to break down the disease into a generalized seven-stage framework.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 1 \u2013 No Impairment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A person functions normally in this stage.\u00a0 An interview with a medical professional does not show any evidence of symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 2 \u2013 Very Mild Decline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This decline may be normal age-related changes or may be the earliest signs of Alzheimer\u2019s.\u00a0 The individual may have memory lapses but no symptoms can be detected during a medical exam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 3 \u2013 Mild Cognitive Decline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In some individuals, early-stage Alzheimer\u2019s may be diagnosed at this point.\u00a0 Friends and family begin to notice difficulties.\u00a0 A detailed medical interview may reveal memory or concentration problems.\u00a0 Stage 3 difficulties may include trouble remembering names, forgetting material that one has just read or misplacing a valuable object.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 4 -Moderate Cognitive Decline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At this stage of Alzheimer\u2019s, a careful medical interview should clearly reveal problems in some of these areas: forgetfulness of recent events, forgetfulness about one\u2019s personal history or difficulty performing complex tasks such as paying bills or managing finances.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 5 \u2013 Moderately Severe Cognitive Decline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At this point, an individual with Alzheimer\u2019s has noticeable gaps in memory and needs help with day-to-day activities.\u00a0 Individuals in stage 5 may be unable to recall their own address or phone number, become confused about where they are, or may need help choosing proper clothing for the season or occasion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 6 \u2013 Severe Cognitive Decline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At this stage, one\u2019s memory continues to worsen, personality changes may occur and individuals need significant help with daily activities.\u00a0 An individual may lose awareness of recent experiences, have trouble remembering the name of a spouse or caregiver, experience major changes in sleep patterns or need help dressing properly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 7 \u2013 Very Severe Cognitive Decline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this last stage of the disease, individuals lose the ability to respond to the environment, to carry on a conversation and, eventually, to control movement.\u00a0 Individuals in stage 7 need help with their daily personal care, including eating and using the toilet.\u00a0 The Alzheimer\u2019s Association also notes that \u201cindividuals may lose the ability to smile, to sit without support and to hold their heads up.\u00a0 Reflexes become abnormal.
