According to the Center For Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), slips and falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among the elderly population.  In light of these statistics, it is important that each and every senior take preventative measures against falls.

1.  Exercise Regularly
Exercise is one of the most helpful ways to prevent elderly falls.  The CDC recommends exercises like Tai Chi that improve balance while strengthening muscles.  It  is important to ask your doctor or health care professional what exercises are best for you.

2.  Review Medications
The use of some medications can cause dizziness, which may lead to slips and falls.  Make sure to carry a list of all medications to doctor appointments and use the same pharmacy each time you fill a prescription.

3. Undergo An Eye Examination
The CDC recommends that seniors undergo eye examinations at least once a year.  A lack of depth perception can be detrimental for an elderly person trying to walk around the house or reach for an object.

4. Reduce Home Hazards
Oftentimes, the home contains many hazards that can lead to slips and falls.  Be sure that hand rails are on both sides of stairways. Eliminate throw rugs and other loose objects on the floor if at all possible.  Lastly, ensure that hallways, bedrooms, and bathrooms are properly lit.

5. Get a Second Opinion
It is often difficult for individuals to notice safety hazards in their own home due to familiarity. Ask a safety professional to walk through your home and notify you of anything that may be considered hazardous.  As advocates for the elderly, Preferred Care at Home offers complimentary home safety inspections.
