In my book, Happiness Is Growing Old at Home, I also discuss ways to mitigate falls. In addition to what is cited in the article, some over-counter medications such as antihistamines or cold remedies can cause drowsiness which in turn can increase the risk of falls. There is all sorts of new technology to help prevent falls, such as the iShoe TM, which is in my book and there are many very innovative devices which are still in the pipeline such as eyeglasses to help people with short-term memory loss. The eyeglasses have two tiny cameras, one looking forward and the other focused on the eye to track what the user is looking at, a memory chip and an audio device. I have an "Updates" section on my web site, www.agingathome.info that includes the latest high-tech devices and gadgets for the elderly.
